A Tampanian’s View on the 305

By: Karina Wilson

A view of two of Miami’s prized possessions: downtown and art.

Miami, Florida. One of the most historic cities in the world. Miami is coined for its Hispanic culture, vivid artwork, overawed buildings, famous beaches, sports, lively atmosphere and so much more.

I embarked on a trip to Miami to witness the Orange Bowl in person. Prior to the football game, my cousin and I took a day-trip to tour the city.

History

Miami‘s early inhabitants were Native Americans, Spanish rulers and Cuban immigrants. They lived off of the Miami River and the population rapidly began to flourish. It wasn’t until 1896 that the ‘Magic City’ was officially named “The City of Miami.”

According to the United States Census Bureau, Miami-Dade County currently has an estimated population of just under three million (2.7M). Additionally, the city is constantly filled to the brim with tourists from near and far.

Wynwood Walls

An encapsulating painting of a fair young maiden in a garden.

Our first stop was the beloved Wynwood Walls. The ever-changing artwork is eye candy to anyone who stumbles upon it.

“The Wynwood Walls has brought the world’s greatest artists working in the graffiti and street art genre to Miami” (Via TheWynwoodwalls.com).

Since 2009, the Wynwood Walls have been a treasured part of Miami and it’s artistic society. Artists from all over the world strive to have their work featured on these walls.

Visitors can be found observing the many pieces in awe.

Hard Rock Stadium

Our final stop in Miami was the Hard Rock Stadium, home of the National Football League’s Miami Dolphins. The Florida Gators defeated the Virginia Cavaliers 36-28 in an epic showdown.

A sea of orange and blue floods the field as the Gators are declared the 2020 Orange Bowl Champions.

A unique stadium, to say the least. The Hard Rock Stadium is located within the heart of Miami Gardens. The partially opened ceiling gives visitors a utopian view into the skyline where blimps, clouds and fireworks can be found.

Filled to the brim with Gator and Cavalier fans, the stadium erupted with cheers during various parts of the game.

Here I can be found posing in front of one of the beautiful murals.

The City of Miami is full of stunning art, culture and landscapes that one can not experience in a one-day trip alone. I highly recommend visiting Miami in all of its glory.
